Julianna Pena beats Amanda Nunes
The women’s bantamweight contest between the champion Amanda Nunes (21-4 MMA, 14-1 UFC) and the challenger Julianna Pena (10-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) was for all the marbles. “The Lioness” was on the peak of her career, and she was defending her belt against the fercious contender, this was an important fight for both these athletes, and they certainly fought that way.
Round 1 – Amanda and Pena got to the centre of the octagon, and both these athletes took some time to engage. Amanda started the action with a hard leg kick that dropped Pena, she got up and right back in Amanda’s face, and started trading punches. Amanda dropped her again with a jab, and got to the top. Pena started getting those scrambles going, and she was looking for a submission. Amanda controlled the top, and hurt her with some ground-and-pound. Pena moved for a Kimura but Amanda defended well, and finished the round on top.

Round 2 – Pena got right back to Amanda’s face, and started trading punches with her. Nunes landes some big shots, but Pena fired back and stood her ground. Pena took some heavy shots from Nunes, but she didn’t backed down. She landed some big shots of her own, and stunned Amanda. Nunes recovered well, and the fight turned into a brawl. Pena was getting the better of the fist fight, and she cracked Nunes with a number of jabs, Amanda was hurt and she engaged the clinch. Pena took her down, and submitted her with rear-naked choke to become the new bantamweight champion. History has been made at the co-main event of UFC 269.
