Alexander Volkanovski vs Max Holloway II

It won’t be surprising to know as the world already saw this coming, but former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will get another title shot against the reigning defending UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, this was the fight the fans and pros around the world not only predicted but wanted it to happen considering the impeccable performances of Holloway in fights he won against his last two opponents in Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez respectively.

Volkanovski on the other hand, who has defeated Holloway twice, first time to get the belt and the next time to defend it, is coming off a possible performance of the year 2021 in a competition to Holloway’s last year performance against Kattar, when he made his second title defence against Brian Ortega at UFC 266 where both the fighters delivered an undisputed round of the year performance in the third round of their epic title fight.

The news was first reported by Brett Okamoto from ESPN as he was told by UFC President Dana White. The fight will happen at UFC 272 which will take place on March 5, 2022, in Las Vegas, USA. The first fight between the two happened at UFC 245 in December of 2019 when Holloway was the champion trying to make his fourth title defence against Volkanovski, but Volkanovski’s gameplan was too perfect and dethroned Holloway from the reign as the other became the new featherweight champion.

The second fight happened in August of 2020 at UFC 251 when this time it was Volkanovski making his title defence. The rematch was so close that many people thought Holloway won the fight. Fast forward to the next year and the business seemed to be settled that Volkanovski and Holloway probably may not cross paths again ever. For the trilogy news, Okamoto wrote on Twitter Trilogy is on. Rounds 11-15 will take place at UFC 272 on March 5, per Dana White. Alexander Volkanovski (@alexvolkanovski) vs. Max Holloway (@BlessedMMA). Two of the best in the world, p4p. Huge stakes. Who you got?”

It was believed that we had the best fighter at 145-lbs in Volkanovski until Holloway fought up and coming featherweight contender Calvin Kattar in January and defeated his opponent having an edge of 10-7 each in all the five rounds of the fight. That fight put on by Holloway was his greatest performance in the UFC featherweight history.

It was in between the fight with Kattar where he looked at the commentary table and shouted “I’m the best boxer in UFC baby!” all while dodging punches from Kattar at the same time. Holloway then proceeded to win a fight of the year candidate put on against Yair Rodriguez who was making his much-anticipated return after two years, in the fight night of November last year.

Holloway on the other hand fought only once in 2021 and that too put on one hell of a performance against Brian Ortega. Volkanovski survived multiple submission attempts from Ortega but it was in round 3 of the title match where Volkanovski’s heart was tested as a fighter and the world witnessed a warrior in a champion that night UFC 266 in September of last year.

Volkanovski was trapped in Ortega’s guillotine choke as well as his triangle choke, which is, by the way, Ortega’s area of specialisation, got trapped in it for a few seconds and to the world’s surprise, got out of the terrible situation, only two win the rest of the fight via unanimous decision.

Who do you get it winning in the trilogy match between Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski? Both the fighters are levels elevated from the rest of the featherweight division, so closely equal in their heart and skill set that it’s difficult to predict what will happen in the trilogy. But Volkanovski likes to figure his opponents out based on which he attempts to set up the gameplan, Holloway now has to bring something on the table that Volkanksi cannot foresee in million years, as this is most certainly going to be the last time they ever see each other.
