Aljamain Sterling was very emotional ahead of his official weigh-ins yesterday ahead of UFC 273. The bantamweight champion explains the reason behind his tears on the scales.
Aljamain Sterling won the UFC bantamweight belt in a very infamous way. The fighter became the first to win the championship belt via disqualification and has been getting slack from a lot of the MMA fans for being an illegitimate champion. At UFC 273 Aljamain will get another opportunity to show the world why he deserves the belt.
Aljamain Sterling takes on UFC interim bantamweight champion Petr Yan in an exciting co-main event fight at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The fighter yesterday successfully made weight in the official weigh-ins but couldn’t control his emotions. The fighter broke down as he stood on the scale. In the post-weigh-ins show, Sterling explained to Paul Felder the reason behind his emotions.
“A lot of people wrote me off and thought my career was pretty much over, they didn’t think that I’d come back after that surgery,” said Sterling talking to Felder in the UFC 273 weigh-in show. Watch Sterling’s weigh-in video below:
“I felt the music had stopped” Aljamain Sterling on his career post-surgery
Sterling took on Petr Yan at UFC 259 in a title fight. The fighter went down after receiving an illegal knee to the face as he was already on the ground. The fighter was determined to fight in a rematch to win the belt in a legitimate way. However following his win at UFC 259, Sterling has not stepped into the octagon for a year now.
He was scheduled to take on Yan in a title rematch but an injury stopped that fight from happening. Sterling went through surgery and successfully recovered from his neck injury. The fighter was very disheartened by it and thought his career was over after the injury. “I was having some trouble to get through the training room. I got through that hurdle and here I am, man. It is a blessing.” said Sterling.
“For me, it was an emotional dream come true because I felt like the music had stopped. I’m just glad I got another opportunity.” Do you think Sterling can retain his belt at UFC 273?
