Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273 weigh ins
Aljamain Sterling, the reigning UFC bantamweight champion, burst into tears after he weighed himself for tomorrow’s title defense against Petr Yan, who currently is the interim title holder.
For the rematch against Yan, Sterling weighed 134.5 lb, while the former comfortably weighed 134 lb with a pound to spare . Their controversial fight took place 13 months ago, with Sterling winning the belt after Yan threw a illegal knee, despite dominating the fight.
Sterling, despite being the underdog in their second fight, has done everything possible to prepare for his first title defense. After having undergone extensive surgery to his neck ,he showed up looking buffed for the UFC 273 weigh-ins. The Funk Master even tells that he’s been much more fit since.
Sterling had to face many hardships before his rematch with Yan. After making the rematch official today, the fighter burst into tears.
TSN later asked him to explain his outburst, where he tells, “A lot of people wrote me off and thought my career was pretty much over, they didn’t think that I’d come back after that surgery… I felt like the music had stopped, I’m just glad I got another opportunity.”

With both the bantamweight fighters, making their weight, it is definite we are going to see Petr and Aljamain square off once again and this time the stakes are higher.
Tensions flared once more at their last pre-fight staredown at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins. UFC President Dana White hesitated to let the fighters get too close but they both promised there would not be any physical altercations. They exchanged words and were eventually separated.
Yan immediately told his rival, “You’re doomed.” Aljamain retaliated by saying, ” I hope you’re right, that same guy is not going to be there.”
After Yan and Sterling’s first fight ended in controversy. Many believed that Sterling should have given up the belt because of the way he won (Petr was disqualified as he kneed Sterling). However, without a care in the world, The Funk Master was seen celebrating his victory, as UFC’s bantamweight champion with friends just hours after the fight.
