‘Battle of the flyweights’ – Askar Askarov will take on Alex Perez on the 31st of July
Askar Askarov and Alex Perez
Askar Askarov will be facing Alex Perez on the 31st of July, next month. The event is set to take place at the UFC Apex, and is headlined by a middleweight clash between Uriah Hall and Sean Strickland. The news of the fight being confirmed was first reported by BJPENN.com
Askar Askarov and Alex Perez are genuine top-ranked flyweights who have a very impressive MMA record. The fight will certainly turn out to be crucial in how things shape up in the flyweight division. It is to be noted that Askarov has already fought Brandon Moreno, the current flyweight champion once. The match ended in a draw.
Alex Perez must be wary of ‘undefeated’ Askar Askarov!
Askarov is coming off a unanimous decision win over Joseph Benavidez at UFC 259. He is still unbeaten in his MMA career. Askarov has fought 15 fights and has won 14 of those, and drawn 1. His draw came against the current flyweight champion Brandon Moreno in September 2019. Askarov is currently 3-0-1 in the UFC, and is on a three-fight win streak.
Perez, on the other hand, is coming off a submission loss against former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo. He had been on a three-fight win streak prior to that. Perez’s MMA record stands at 24 wins and 6 losses, with a UFC record of 6 wins and 2 defeats.
Askarov is ranked number 2 in the flyweight division and Perez, number 4. Hence, this will surely turn out to be a number one contender fight for the flyweight title. The winner of the fight might directly get a title shot against Brandon Moreno if Figueiredo doesn’t take on the Mexican in a rematch.
Who do you think will get their hands raised, come the 31st of July.
