Gilbert Burns talks about the importance of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov in the fighting career of Khabib. In a recent interview with The AllStar, Burns talks about the difference in Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s careers. Islam is currently following the path of Khabib by dominating his opponents and is likely to be in the conversation for the next title shot.
Khabib retired as a 29-0 fighter and as the number one pound-for-pound champion. Burns says that having someone like Abdulmanap in his life as a coach, trainer, friend, and, mentor has certainly helped Khabib mold his career into a perfect one. “The one thing that Khabib had was his dad, you know,” said Burns on the former lightweight champion.

The late Abdulmanap is a great figure in the history of combat sports. There are several champions in the world of combat sports world who wouldn’t be where they are without the influence of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. “I think Khabib was special because of his dad. Being his trainer, his mentor, his friend. I think that helps on a different level,” says Burns.
“If I have my dad as a coach, as a friend, as a mentor, every day…so he kinda knows me better than [I know myself] helps a lot.” Burns also believes that Islam has to be very grateful given he has had the experience of being coached by both, Khabib and his dad.
“On the other hand, Islam having Khabib’s dad there, having Khabib there, having suffered a loss…I think Islam is very mature. And, yeah he can become a champion,” says Gilbert Burns.
