Chael Sonnen roots for Colby Covington vs Israel Adesanya

UFC legend Chael Sonnen backs Colby Covington in his call out of the middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. The MMA analyst believes the fight between the two superstars makes sense and could turn out to be an absolute blockbuster.

Chael Sonnen is not wrong when he says that a fight between Colby Covington and Israel Adesanya would turn out to be a massive hit. Both the fighters are huge pay-per-view stars and are excellent inside the octagon. Covington has called out Adesanya quite a few times now and believes he could take down the 185-pound champion.

Sonnen talks to MMA reporter Helen Yee in an interview and gives his thoughts on the super fight. “Colby made a suggestion, ‘Imma take that golden ticket and go up to 185 pounds’. I think he should be allowed to do it. You cannot be the number one contender and not have a title shot,” said Chael talking to Helen Yee. Colby is coming off a win against his arch-rival, former friend Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272.

“I want to see Colby [Covington] fight Izzy Adesanya. And quite frankly, Izzy Adesanya needs somebody that is going to meet him halfway,” said Chael. “I think that Adesanya is also a master. He is a master entertainer. On the way to ring, what he does…he leaves the microphone behind. He needs somebody that can match him.”

“Robert Whittaker left him hanging, didn’t want to meet halfway. Cannonier is not going to meet him halfway. Those two [Colby and Izzy] need each other right now. They could form a partnership and they could do some business,” explained Sonnen in the recent interview. Sonnen also says he has spoken to Covington about this and “Chaos” is sold on the idea.

Adesanya is lapping the middleweight division and is looking to fight a new contender, Jared Cannonier for his next fight. Meanwhile, despite Covington being the number one contender, he has fought for the title twice against Kamaru Usman and failed both times which makes it difficult for another title shot anytime soon.
