Charles Oliveira performed incredibly well at UFC 274 and proved yet again why he is the best lightweight in the world. The Brazilian defeated Justin Gaethje in the 4th minute of the first round via a rear naked submission.

But even after putting on a show and winning the bout, Oliveira is not the lightweight champion as the title has been stripped off the fighter. It happened before the fight day, when Oliveira missed the weight limit by 0.5 during the weigh-ins.

While talking about it, the fighter confirmed that he didn’t do anything wrong and it’s not his fault and he blamed the weighing scale for the error.

In the post fight press conference of UFC 274, president Dana White opened up about the whole incident. He said :

“We have this issue where guys come out and they’ll start checking the scale the night before and all the Europeans and guys from other parts of the world do kilos, so they all start f****** with the scale to look at kilos and, who knows.

After the end of UFC 274, Chael Sonnen posted a video of him talking about the event on his official YouTube channel.

While talking about Oliveira and him missing the weight, Sonnen gave a brief explanation of how much that miss would have cost the fighter. Sonnen explained the overall loss could be around $ 2 million that the Brazilian might have incurred. Sonnen revealed this is because a lot of money depends on how the fighter is participating in the bout. Sonnen also added that with the loss of sponsors the amount could go more. There are other things such as pay-per-view clause etc.

“I could probably come up with, right here in front of you, about $2.3m that that scale fail cost him. Just so you understand how participation works for defending a championship. You must understand that word – defending a championship… So you’re talking about the exact same thing, just that sponsor money goes down. You’re looking at another 30 grand… but also the pay-per-view clause, you’re looking at another million bucks. Don’t forget the escalation that would go into his built-in show fee. Does not happen.”

Although there are no official reports about Oliveira’s losses as it is a private business, it is sure that the fighter has lost a lot. In combat sports, weight limits are taken seriously and any fighter that fails to make it, always faces repercussions. But in the eyes of fans, Oliveira is still the lightweight champion and will always be with or without the title.
