“It’s called respect you fool,” Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira trade harsh thoughts ahead of their potential title fight in 2022
Justin Gaethje- Charles Oliveira
The events of UFC 268 and UFC 269 have decided the fate of many divisions in 2022, case in point, Justin Gaethje who won a unanimous decision against Michael Chandler at UFC 268, is most likely to meet the reigning defending lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira, for his second UFC title shot in 2022. This was Gaethje’s first fight after more than a year layoff and he not only fought but fought a fight of the year candidate.
Oliveira is coming off his first successful title defence and probably the biggest victory of his career at UFC 269 when he submitted the odds’ favourite, the challenger Dustin Poirier via rear-naked choke in the third round. Oliveira is definitely the runner up in the fighter of the year contest if welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is the winner. Oliveira however, is also toying up with the idea of having his second title defence against UFC megastar Conor McGregor. However, that doesn’t mean Oliveira is going to ignore Gaethje and his tactics to assure a title fight.
Charles Oliveira tells Justin Gaethje to keep the same energy, Gaethje fires back in response
In a Portuguese Podcast organised by MMA Fighting, titled Trocação Franca, Oliveira said, ” [Justin Gaethje] is talking a bunch of crap all the time, and when we meet face to face, he says he has all the respect for me and what I do and two minutes later, he’s saying he will break my face… These guys hype things up and try to sell the fight with something that they are not.”
Gaethje reacts to Oliveira’s comments responding to the post by MMA Fighting on Twitter saying “@CharlesDoBronxs it’s called respect you fool and we are in the breaking faces business. My respect that night was just as real as my intention to take everything from you in your country @ufc #uhvaimorrer“
Gaethje and Oliveira now have a little bit of beef to build up a story on and hence lead the fight. Gaethje has slightly more chances against Conor McGregor that he will get the title fight before the latter against the champion Oliveira now. McGregor is important to keep in mind because Gaethje is right now worried about the probability of the UFC giving McGregor a title shot straight away and that too before him if and when he returns.
What do you make of this exchange between Oliveira and Gaethje? Who do you get the fight winning when it happens? Oliveira has shown his striking capacity to be as good as any other elite striker in the UFC, but Gaethje too is a maestro of it. However, if the fight goes to the ground, Oliveira is someone who’s leaps ahead in Jiu-Jitsu compared to the rest of the lightweight division.
