Conor McGregor has been all over the MMA World headlines for all the controversial reasons. But that doesn’t mean that Dana White or the UFC stops planning fights for him. In the eyes of the UFC, McGregor is still their biggest star, and the biggest box office draw in the history of the sport.
The UFC President spoke to ESPN recently about McGregor. When asked about any potential plans for Conor McGregor, Dana White said he has “fun stuff” planned and expects an early 2021 return.
According to White, McGregor wouldn’t compete again until 2021 at the earliest. But his return would certainly be welcomed in the UFC, where he remains the biggest draw in the history of the sport.
Dana White expecting a 2021 return for McGregor
Conor McGregor last fought in late January 2020 at UFC 246 where he made his return after 15 months. Conor McGregor would defeat Donald Cerrone in the first round. While he stated that he was getting ready for a ‘fight season.’ An unexpected turn saw him retire for the 3rd time in 4 years due to lack of opponents.
Since that time, McGregor has stuck to his guns about staying retired, but it appears that the Irish superstar has started talking to the UFC again about a potential return.
“We’re actually working on some fun stuff for Conor at the beginning of next year,” White revealed when speaking to ESPN on Thursday. “He should be back next year. I’m not saying he’s coming back to fight guaranteed, but we’re talking right now about some stuff.”
While one could argue that UFC will make money from pay-per-view sales alone. There might be a slight sense of hesitation over bringing McGregor back while taking a cut in the potential revenue.
Having said that, there is no guarantee that we will see the return of live crowds in early 2021 either.
