Gilbert Burns’ unanimous decision victory against Jorge Masvidal in his own nation gave him a significant win at UFC 287. With this victory, Burns is one step closer to his desired goal of another title battle. He made it obvious in both his post-fight interview and his chat with Joe Rogan that he won’t accept anything less than a championship bout.
The current champion, Leon Edwards is set to face Colby Covington. Meanwhile, Gilbert Burns trains with Shavkat Rakhmonov, which adds a bit more confusion about his next opponent. But the surety came after his post-fight interview with UFC 287.
“I’m gonna be a back-up. I’m going to. I’m not asking. I’m demanding that I’m going to. Because whenever they asked… any time the UFC gave me a call asking for opponents, I say yes. And now, I’m demanding. I’m going out there, I’m gonna do my training camp (for) five rounds. I’ll go to London, I’ll be the back-up, and I’m the next in line to fight for the title. Otherwise, let me go, my guy. Let me do my thing. These guys are making a million dollars a year in other organizations. Step up. That’s it.” Post-fight interview UFC 287.
Despite calling to be the backup for the title fight, it seemed like Burns needed to take another fight before getting a title shot. A sensible option came in as Belal Muhammad, and after a lot of back and forth on various social media platforms, the two have finally been booked to face each other at UFC 288.
Possibilities for Gilbert Burns’s next opponent

Following the demands of ‘Durinho’, Dana White gave him this answer: “I love that, Yeah, why not? You got a deal.” So it is clear that Dana White agrees that Burns should get the next fight against the champion.
But as Dana White has already stated, Colby Covington will compete against reigning champion Leon Edwards. Many in the MMA community believed that giving Covington another shot was unjust. ‘Chaos’ has already lost two title matches against Kamaru Usman. Given that he has also only defeated Masvidal, it doesn’t make much sense to give him another shot at the championship.
The reason why the UFC president gave Colby the opportunity might have been because he was available as backup for Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman 3. However, following Gilbert Burns’ request, Dana White agreed for Burns to be the backup for the next championship fight. This could eventually lead to Burns winning the championship in the future.
