Ask Chael Sonnen how UFC 272 headlined by a bad-blooded grudge match between welterweights Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal is doing in terms of marketing and “The Bad Guy” will be all smiles about it. But Sonnen has more insights on the fight game of this matchup than he has on the fight business, considering he knows Covington way before the latter’s beginning inside the UFC octagon since both of them are raised from the same city of West Linn, Oregon.

Covington is facing Masvidal on the basis of a narrative, which is more of a fact that both of them were best friends who trained together in the American Top Team and under Masvidal’s famous striking coach Paulino Hernandez. With some back and forth as long as 4 years ago, Covington and Masvidal have since traded fighting words against each other numerous times and it has been 3 years since Covington left American Top Team and Hernandez and now trains at MMA Masters.

Sonnen, a legend of the sport who retired in 2019 with 50 professional fights, gave his official prediction on who he thinks will win this bad-blood inside the octagon come this weekend at UFC 272 on his Youtube Channel.

Guys, I am taking [Colby] Covington, says Sonnen. “Colby Covington, is one of the most accurately named monikers within our industry, ‘Chaos,’ it is chaos when he fights, he is a straight-up bad intentioned brawler. He’s going to punch you while trying to grab you, he’s going to take you down, hoping that your hand breaks, there’s that, he has terrible intentions

Can [Jorge] Masvidal can stop a takedown? You bet your ass he can. Can he stop a takedown followed by a takedown followed by another takedown? No! It’s different. MMA wrestlers that have a good career will come out there and they’ll take a shot. The greats, use that shot to set up the second shot, they use the second shot to set up the third shot, it’s called chain wrestling… The only way you can chain wrestle within MMA is if you amateur wrestle and Colby still does,” concludes Sonnen.

What do you make of Sonnen’s reasoning to pick Covington as the winner? Do you think he is absolutely right about Covington having a dominant advantage in the chain-wrestling aspect? Do you think Masvidal will succumb to that very soon in the fight? Or will Masvidal, who’s had 50 professional fights himself like Sonnen, will lead the fight and end Covington quick in the striking department resulting in a cold knockout?
