“He is the true #1 contender,” Chael Sonnen calls Sean Strickland as legit owner of a title shot

Chael Sonnen- Sean Strickland

UFC Middleweight Sean Strickland has a much stronger case of getting a title shot than one would make, at least that’s what MMA Legend Chael Sonnen thinks. Strickland, who started off his UFC career as a welterweight, had some ups and downs with an experience of fighting the current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Eventually, Strickland decided to get done with intense weight cutting and move up to middleweight, and that’s when things changed for real good.

Strickland is currently on a 6-fight winning streak with significant victories at middleweight over the likes of Krzysztof Jotko, Uriah Hall and Jack Hermansson. Strickland is now scheduled to fight someone not big in stakes but the biggest name on a purely competition basis. He is going to be put against Alex Pereira at UFC 277, the man who knocked out the current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya during his kickboxing days.

Chael Sonnen thinks Sean Strickland has a much compelling argument to make against Jared Cannonier’s title contention

On his Youtube Channel, Chael Sonnen talks about why he thinks what he thinks about Strickland’s position in title contention and mainly talks about the buildup of Strickland’s matchup against Pereira. Chael begins with telling a Strickland story where he met the latter when he was 21-years old as per him and was surprised to know he was 17-0 back then, after which Sonnen makes this bold claim down below.

“I believe Sean is the true #1 contender, I do believe that,” says Sonnen “I do believe that Sean has won 7 fights in a row or eight, against the fact that Jared Cannonier’s (#3 UFC middleweight) last fight had one completed round and no judge thought Jared won it, I think it’s a compelling argument. I thought it’s the one that Sean should make. Now Jared Cannonier has earned this, I am not taking away anything from Jared. What I am saying is, if I was in Sean’s spot and I have to attack Jared as a way of getting what I want, that’s the angle I would’ve gone,” concluded Sonnen.

What do you make of Sonnen’s comments on supporting Strickland to be most deserving of the title shot? Do you think that aforementioned argument against Jared Cannonier, who will be getting the next title shot against the current champion Israel Adesanya, is fair enough? Who do you think has got the upper hand between Strickland and Pereira in their upcoming matchup?
