The story of Jorge Masvidal’s transformation started 16 years ago in a sun-filled backyard behind a laundromat in Miami. Masvidal was standing there, waiting for something to happen. The yard, which was usually empty, had a crowd of people surrounding two shirtless men who were getting ready to fight bare-knuckled.

Since he was the best fighter among his friends, they would pool their money together and bet against anyone who claimed to be a skilled fighter in the area. One fighter wanted to test Jorge Masvidal street fighting skills

One of the fighters was known as ‘Ray’, a well-known street fighter in the city, standing six feet tall and weighing around 200 pounds. The fight began, and Ray quickly knocked his opponent to the ground with a powerful punch. The crowd erupted with excitement, but Ray wasn’t done yet. He called out to Jorge Masvidal’s street fighting ability to test again, demanding that he step into the yard. And so, the main event began.

While Jorge Masvidal was waiting in a McDonald’s drive-thru, someone called him and asked if he was interested in fighting Ray. The call was from Kimbo Slice, a famous MMA fighter and boxer who gained fame in 2003 for uploading his street fights on YouTube. Without hesitation, Masvidal drove to the other side of Miami to face Ray on the same day.

In an interview, Jorge said, “There was never any animosity. It was just fierce competition and two guys going at it. If I’d lost, I would have gone over to him, shook his hand and hugged him.”

While mutual combat is not officially illegal in Florida, it still remains a legal grey area and participants could face charges.

Masvidal never worried about the legal aspects of street fighting and mutual combat. However, he knew that it was unpredictable and could lead to unexpected outcomes. In 2004, at the age of 18, Masvidal fought Ray and beat him. He later won in a rematch against Ray around a year later. Later on, everyone wanted to know about Masvidal’s street fighting stories.
