“If I can pick, it would be him”- Gunnar Nelson would love to settle the score against Santiago Ponzinibbio
Gunnar Nelson vs Santiago Ponzinibbio
Gunnar Nelson (18-5-1 MMA, 9-5 UFC) was one of the most mysterious fighters on the UFC roster, he stirred up things upon his arrival, but 2 back to back losses forced him to sit on the sidelines for almost 3 years. Nelson returned to the octagon to face Takashi Sato at UFC London. Nelson looked better than ever, and he dominated Sato for three rounds to secure the unanimous decision victory.
Many expected Nelson to experience a little ring rust upon his return, but Nelson felt better than ever. Talking about his performance during the post-fight interview, he said, “I felt good. I felt very good. I’ve been saying this week even though I’ve been away for two and a half years, everything feels so familiar. It’s kind of like meeting an old friend after many, many years – it’s just the same. It’s just the same as it was before. … I really enjoyed it, and obviously I really enjoyed walking in from the crowd and getting this win tonight, for sure.”
Nelson is really happy that he got the win, but right now he wants to get back in the gym, and prepare for his next opponent. “Right now, I’m itching to get back in the gym, to be honest,” Nelson said. “There’s a few things in there I could feel fresh in my mind and my body is really fresh, so I feel like I could train tonight. There’s no injuries or nothing and I feel really fresh, so I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym and working.”

Nelson was expected to win the title back in the day, and he was doing a good job of taking down top-ranked opponents. Santiago Ponzinibbio handed him the first big loss of his career by knocking him out at the main event of UFC Fight Night: Nelson vs Ponzinibbio. Ponzinibbio also took some time out from the action after riling up a 7 fight win streak.
He returned to the octagon in 2021, and he went 1-2 in his last three fights. Nelson talked about his future, and even though he doesn’t have a preference, he would love to settle the score against Santiago. He said, “I don’t care, to be honest. Anyone. I’ve said that many times (I want a rematch against Ponzinibbio), and I’ll say it again. If I can pick, it would be him.”
