“I’m ahead of him in the rankings”, “5 fight winning streak” – Jared Cannonier and Derek Brunson present their cases for middleweight title shot

Derek Brunson and Jared Cannonier

Jared Cannonier and Derek Brunson have been presenting their own cases for a title shot. Both the fighters are coming off impressive wins. While Brunson recently dominated Darren Till in the main event of UFC Vegas 36 to win the fight, Cannonier saw off Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC Vegas 34, winning via submission.

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Jared Cannonier claimed that it was he who deserved a shot at the title and not Derek Brunson. He went on to state that the opponents he has faced in recent times are much better than the opponents Brunson has beaten in recent times.

Cannonier was quoted as saying, “Naturally, cause I’m ahead of him in the rankings. My resume of who I beat, the last four guys, got four wins in the division. The last four guys who I beat have all been better than the guys that he’s beat. I know he’s on a winning streak, but my four out of five wins are better than his five out of what, five?” [via MMA Fighting]

“Y’all will fall for anything” – Derek Brunson on Jared Cannonier

Brunson then hit back at Cannonier on Twitter, before bringing up Cannonier’s UFC record and comparing it to his.

Brunson was quoted as saying, “14-5 (5 fight winning streak) in the UFC vs 6-4 (1 fight “streak) in the UFC. Who’s the number #1 after the title fight … y’all will fall for anything … carry on.”

Cannonier just got back on track after beating Gastelum recently. He had previously lost to Robert Whittaker at UFC 254 in October 2020, following which he had also suffered a fractured ulna.

The 37-year old Brunson, meanwhile, has been wreaking havoc in the UFC. He is on a five-fight win streak, and hasn’t lost since 2018. Whose case do you think is stronger here?
