Jorge Masvidal shares his prediction for Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler rematch

Nick Diaz, Jorge Masvidal and Robbie Lawler

Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler will be running back their 17-year old fight at UFC 266 on the 25th of September. The fight will be a five-round non-title fight – just what the fans would want. The pair previously fought way back in April 2004 at UFC 47 – Diaz knocked Lawler out with a punch in the second round.

In a recent Q&A session on his YouTube channel, number 6 ranked UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal gave his prediction for the much anticipated Diaz-Lawler rematch. Despite the fact that Nick Diaz hasn’t fought in almost 7 years, ‘Gamebred’ stated that he was “leaning towards” the Stockton man.

“I haven’t seen Nick fight” – Jorge Masvidal

Masvidal was quoted as saying, “I haven’t seen Nick fight. I didn’t know if he was staying in the best shape or not during these eight years. It’s not that ring rust is everything, but eight years is a lot of time to be sitting on the bench. So I want to say that Robbie hasn’t been looking like himself, he hasn’t been looking the greatest in his fights with – this is a tough one to call for me. But if I was going to put money on it, I’d probably lean toward Nick.” [via MMA Junkie]

Robbie Lawler is coming off a unanimous decision loss against Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night: Smith vs Rakic. He has been in the poorest form of his life. With four losses on the trot, Lawler hasn’t won a fight since beating Donald Cerrone at UFC 214, way back in July 2017.

Diaz, on the other hand, hasn’t fought since January 2015. He took on Anderson Silva that night in January (At UFC 183). Originally, a unanimous decision win for Silva, the fight was deemed a no-contest, after both tested positive for banned substances. Diaz, was hit with a ban and so was Silva.

Following his ban, Diaz’s interest in the sport waned, and it was only in late 2020, that he gained his spark back. Now that he is back, he will be looking forward to returning with a bang.
