Jorge Masvidal often talks about his love for America and never shies away from showing his patriotic side. Masvidal was born to a Cuban father and a Peruvian mother who immigrated to the US in order to settle.

While talking to Fox News, Masvidal gave a detailed description of how his father and his best friend left Cuba in self-made rafts and reached US soil. “My dad, his best friend, and his best friend’s uncle, they got two tire tractors, turned them into a raft, and hit the seas,” said Masvidal. 

Masvidal later mentioned that after he became a teenager, he got to know why his father made the decision to leave his home country. According to the UFC legend, his father did that in order to escape the autocratic rule in Cuba.

“As I got older, you know, like close to my teens, like 11, 12 years old, I really understood why my dad did this,” said Masvidal. “And it was escape the tyranny that that is communism over there in Cuba, in places like Venezuela, where we see this happening in Brazil. So this was like just part of like a daily topic, a daily conversation that we talk about always, you know, whether I engage it or not. This was spoken out on the dinner tables around the family.” 

Masvidal grew up in Miami and struggled a lot during his childhood. He frequently got into fights with other kids in the area but all that really shaped up for him as he became an MMA fighter.

In an interview with ESPN, the fighter talked about how he got involved in a physical altercation with a kid who pulled a knife at the fighter. However, Masvidal managed to escape from the situation.

He said: “I got in trouble in school. Maybe like two blocks down right by my elementary school, the first time I got a knife pulled at me. This kid pulled a knife, he was a little bit older… And the guy grabbed me by the shirt, pulls me in and takes out of the knife and I freaked out, pushed back and took off.”

Way before getting into UFC, Masvidal was famous due to his street and backyard fighting videos with Kimbo Slice. Those days gave Masvidal the nickname ‘Street Jesus’ which is iconic. Masvidal is a UFC legend and has a humongous fan base, even now after his retirement, Masvidal is still a relevant name in combat sports.
