“Just steamrolled everybody”- Dan Hooker takes his pick for Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev’s welterweight battle
Dan Hooker- Gilbert Burns vs Khamzat Chimaev
UFC Welterweights Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev are going to try putting on an exciting fight and UFC featherweight Dan Hooker tells how it goes. Burns and Chimaev are going to fight each other at UFC 273, which is headlined by a featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkaovksi and Chan Sung Jung aka The Korean Zombie. Hooker is coming off a loss in his return to the featherweight division against Arnold Allen last to last week at UFC London and is expected to take some time before coming back to the Octagon.
Talking about the matchup, Gilbert Burns is a former UFC welterweight title challenger who once fought at lightweight as well but found his true rhythm of mind and body coordination at 170-lbs only. Burns has secured wins over the likes of former title challenger Stephen Thompson, former champion Tyron Woodley, former title challenger Demian Maia, Gunnar Nelson, Alex Oliveira and many more. Chimaev is possibly the biggest hype train in UFC history who’s going to fight the #2 welterweight contender in Burns himself in just his 5th UFC fight.
UFC fighter Dan Hooker thinks Gilbert Burns has a better record to back up his skills than Khamzat Chimaev
In an interview with sports journalist James Lynch, various fighters chose their pick for the winner of the Burns and Chimaev matchup which included Hooker as well. In his prime in the lightweight division, Hooker has secured a win over Burns back when the latter was fighting in the lightweight division as well.
“Like there’s so much information on Gilbert Burns, then there’s nothing,“ says Hooker “Khamzat just keeps just destroying these guys and walking right through them. So it’s just … there’s just not like enough information to prove it, you know… Khamzat just steamrolled everybody but… like in the same boat, Gilbert Burns is the elite of the division…
Like is it too big of a jump [for Khamzat] to make in such a short period of time?… in studying a fighter… you have to go with the one with a proven track record,” concludes Hooker citing that he will go with Burns over Chimaev to win the predictably exciting welterweight bout.
What do you make of Hooker’s prediction? Who do you think wins this fight? Both Burns and Chimaev have the complete game as mixed-martial artists to have this fight go wherever they want, or can even adapt to wherever it goes against any one of both’s wishes. Chimaev has pressure to prove that the hype behind him, the training stories as well as the aura of near invincibility are all as valid as they have come out.
