“F**k that…Why would I sign up for two more rounds?” – Justin Gaethje not interested in fighting Michael Chandler in a five-rounder
Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler
Justin Gaethje is not interested in fighting Michael Chandler for five rounds. ‘The Highlight’ will be making his return to the Octagon after more than 13 months, since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 (October 2020). He will be taking on Michael Chandler in a stacked UFC card at UFC 268 in the first week of November. The event is expected to take place at the Madison Square Garden.
Now, Justin Gaethje, who hasn’t had nice things to say about his opponent Michael Chandler, presented his case for why he would not be going toe-to-toe with Chandler for five rounds. He revealed that it would be worth fighting for five rounds only if it is in a championship match or the main event. He did not want himself risking a chronic injury.
“I’ll save those for championship fights or main events” – Justin Gaethje
Justin Gaethje told Brett Okamoto, “F**k that. Why would I sign up for two more rounds? I get paid the same. I get paid the same, at the end of the day. If I’m gonna ever suffer a critical, chronic (injury), or ultimately death in that cage, it will be in round four or five. So I’ll save those for championship fights or main events. I’m cool.” [via Bloody Elbow]
Gaethje is off a loss against Khabib at UFC 254, when he fought for the lightweight title. Prior to that he had beaten the previously indomitable Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 to win the interim lightweight title. In fact he knocked Tony out.
Chandler, on the other hand, is coming off a defeat against Charles Oliveira at UFC 262 in May 2021. He had fought for the lightweight title, in only his second UFC fight. The former Bellator star made his UFC debut at UFC 257, and beat Dan Hooker in the very first round to cap off a stunning debut.
