Former UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje returned to the octagon after losing the title unification match to Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2020. He took on the former Bellator lightweight champion, Michael Chandler at UFC 268.
These two went to absolute war for three rounds and after the dust settled, Gaethje came out victorious, and now he is planning to take on the winner of Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira for his next title shot. He recently had a scuffle with Islam Makhachev and claimed he hasn’t earned his right to get the title shot.
Sports journalist Vladimir Gornostaev, recently interviewed Gaethje, he asked him about the mental preparation that went in to prepare for someone like Chandler, he asked, “Your preparation for the fight with Chandler, what was the most important mental or physical preparation for you?”
Gaethje said, “I am ready both mentally and physically, different things can happen in battle and it is necessary to be ready for anything. I go to the octagon to give my best, show an excellent fight and knock out my opponent. This is my job, this is what I love to do.”
“I think Peter will return more hungry and take the belt from him,” Justin Gaethje predicts Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling 2
Vladimir also asked him about Petr Yan’s controversial knee against Aljamain Sterling, Gaethje claimed the decision to strip Yan was right, but he was actually winning that fight, and if it wasn’t for that knee, he would have won the fight.
He said, “Do you know how many boxers and fighters died from prohibited strikes? Rules are rules and must be followed. But despite this, I believe that Peter was better than Sterling, Peter would have won this fight, if not for his mistake. I think Peter will return more hungry and take the belt from him.”
