“I was impressed, respect where respect is due,” Kamaru Usman was very impressed by Nick Diaz at UFC 266
Kamaru Usman on Nick Diaz
Nick Diaz returned to the octagon after six years of absence at UFC 266, he took on Robbie Lawler in a rematch and lost the fight in the second round. Many thought the fight was underwhelming, but the champion Kamaru Usman thinks otherwise.
Diaz claimed the rematch with Lawler makes no sense, and he should have faced Kamaru Usman instead. He was pretty sure that he could’ve beaten Usman if given a chance, Usman liked the energy from Diaz, and now he said that he was impressed by Nick.
Talking to his followers in an Instagram video he said, “I know a lot of people were kind of coming down on him hard for the comments and the statements that he made during the week. At the end of the day, you have to believe in yourselves and Nick believed in himself… A lot of people were kind of going hard at him for the comments Nick made and I didn’t like that because Nick still stepped in there after six and a half years being gone.”
“He’s a tough guy and very OG of the game,” Kamaru Usman has nothing but respect for Nick Diaz
Usman believes the fact that Diaz stepped inside the octagon was amazing. Obviously, 6 years of absence would change anyone, but Usman saw some potential in there. He said, “Six years and some change… Nick was still throwing them things. I was impressed, I was impressed. Of course, the pace that Lawler put on him, there was no way Nick was gonna be able to stay with that pace after being gone for so long.”
He continued, “So, kind of exactly what I thought would happen. Honestly, I thought Robbie would have gotten him out of there a little bit earlier but that shows the toughness of Nick. He’s a tough guy and very OG of the game and fighting for before I knew about the UFC. I give respect where respect is due.”
