These days, UFC champions struggle to defend their title more than five times consecutively. Somehow the steam always run out. Meanwhile, Demetrious Johnson defended his title for 11 consecutive times. It also cemented his legacy as a GOAT candidate. Johnson’s stats and accolades are widely infamous. But his family life is something he has kept private for very long — including his siblings.
Demetrious Johnson is now a family man with his wife, Destiny Johnson, and their children. Outside of that, he has had a rough run not knowing his father, growing up. Appearing on the ‘Outta Pocket’ Podcast hosted by former NFL QB Robert Griffin III, “Mighty Mouse” opened up about homosexuality in his family. DJ said it’s a hard topic to broach, but gave his thoughts.
My sister, she was a lesbian. I have a brother, he likes men and it’s a hard subject because I keep it real…I tell my brother all the time, ‘Don’t be coming over here with all that gay sh*t.’ I told my kids that, too… We knew he was gay to begin with…We didn’t care. We still love him. He’s cool.

This remains a very sensitive area of topic. It’s nothing compared to some other brazen views in the roster. Unsurprisingly, Johnson’s comments sparked a range of reactions on social media. While many applauded ‘DJ’ for his outspoken stance, others lambasted the flyweight legend for allegedly spreading homophobia.

Johnson is focusing more on his family, BJJ, and his YouTube channel these days. During the ONE 168 Live telecast, Johnson announced his retirement; CEO Chatri Sityodtong has billed he’d be the inaugural HOF member for ONE FC. UFC CEO Dana White has said he’d also do his part to include “Mighty” in the UFC Hall of Fame.

UFC/MMA fans are unanimous in their recognition of Demetrious Johnson as one of the greatest fighters. However, few are aware of the tortuous road he took to get there. While troubled upbringings are common in the sport, Johnson’s background is unparalleled.
In the absence of his biological father, ‘Mighty Mouse’ had to deal with an abusive stepfather before he ever stepped into the fold. Speaking to Ariel Helwani in 2015, the MMA legend also revealed that his mother was deaf, which he didn’t even know existed for most of his growing up.
[I found out] …when I met my sister for the first time. We were in middle school… My sister knew. I was living with my mom the whole time [and I didn’t notice].

When interviewed, Johnson told Helwani that he had never met his father. A couple of years later in 2018, at the age of 31, the flyweight fighter would finally have that moment. In his retirement speech at ONE 168, Johnson thanked his father. He also said that they now have a good relationship.
