Michael Chandler

Michael Chander started off his title bout against Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 262 in a dominant fashion. Having knocked down Oliveira in the first round, Chandler was unable to land that killer blow to finish the Brazilian. The fight went into the second round. Out of nowhere, Oliveira switched on in the second round, knocking out Chandler in just 19 seconds. Oliveira thereby won the vacant lightweight title.

Speaking to Damon Martin of MMA fighting, Chandler said that the loss would be a massive learning curve for him. He also sounded disappointed when he spoke about how he came close to finishing Oliveira, but couldn’t deliver the knockout blow.

It’s a way for me to move on‘ – Michael Chandler

Chandler was quoted as saying, “It’s a way for me to move on. It’s a way for me to pass the guard, a changing of the guard into this little season of rest into my next training camp and into my next opportunity. But I can’t move onto those things until I admit my faults, admit my past and admit my failure on May 15 just a couple of weeks ago to be able to move forward. [via MMA Fighting]

‘Iron Mike’ continued, “I got caught and I lost. I was in the thick of it. Charles Oliveira was the No. 3 guy in the world, now he’s the No. 1 guy in the world. I have one loss in the UFC and I had a 10-8 round against him. Charles Oliveira hadn’t lost a round since 2017 and I had a 10-8 round against him within one minute, one inch of finishing him in the first round and getting that UFC belt.” [via MMA Fighting]

A couple of wins, and Chandler would once again be back in the lightweight title contention.

Michael Chandler now has 1 win and 1 loss in the UFC. He still hasn’t gone out of the top 5 of the lightweight rankings. A fight against number 2 ranked Justin Gaethje seems to be looming large, and Chandler even recently claimed in an interview that he would knock the ‘Highlight’ out.

Gaethje hasn’t fought since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254. He will have to take up a fight soon, and the fight against Chandler is considered by many to be the fan-favourite fight of the year.
