Tragedy struck Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s Dagestan crew when a rising contender of their team was shot to death. 21-year-old Magomedrasul Mutaev was the fighter who lost his life as the perpetrator shot him 8 times. He had earlier survived a gunshot attempt but could not survive this time. Like Nurmagomedov, Mutaev had trained under the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov in Dagestan.
As per reports from Russian news outlets,19-year-old Dagestan native Nadyrkhan Kadyrkhanov is the suspect in the murder. Moreover, police and media presumed revenge to be the motivator for the murder. Mutaev had earlier confronted Kadyrkhanov for some comments he made. The confrontation was violent as Mutaev had accomplices who assaulted Kadyrkhanov. Moreover, Mutaev allegedly urinated in the face of Kadyrkhanov after the group assault. The incident made Kadyrkhanov suffer humiliation.

Police and media presume the disrespectful act to be the prime motivator for the murder. Nonetheless, there is no official confirmation regarding whether the peeing took place or not. The CCTV footage of the murder is available on social media. In the footage, Mutaev went out of his training facility after practice only for the murderer to come in on a white vehicle and shoot eight times. Mutaev suffered an injury to both the head and torso. He did not die at the spot but died inside the ambulance which took him to the hospital.
Magomedrasul Mutaev was from Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia; the same as Khabib Nurmagomedov. Mutaev was a light heavyweight fighter who only made his debut in November of 2023. He fought fellow debutant Elgun Yusibov and won via unanimous decision at AMC Fight Nights 122. Mutaev had a fight scheduled at AMC Fight Nights 123 on February 23, 2024, against Keyvan Rezaei Dalini before his death.
Khabib Nurmagomedov reveals why Dagestan fighters are strong
Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most dominant fighters ever in the UFC. Nurmagomedov barely lost a round in his MMA career. Opponents succumbed to the extreme pressure and strength of Nurmagomedov. He retired as the undefeated UFC lightweight champion and pound-for-pound king.

In an interview, Nuramgomedov revealed why fighters from Dagestan are strong with a warrior mentality. He attributed the strength to genetics, tough life, and the culture. The Russian fighter stated that genetic benefits due to living in the mountains coupled with the tough life make the Dagestani fighters strong. Moreover, he stated that the traditional wrestling culture of his nation also contributes to it.

After Nurmagomedov vacated the title, Charles Oliveira became the champion. However, the title came back to Dagestan as Islam Makhachev became the champion with a submission win over Oliveira at UFC 280.
