“From Conor to Canelo,” 5 BIGGEST names that Kamaru Usman wanted to fight had he defeated Leon Edwards at UFC 278

Leon Edwards x Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman might have been the arguable greatest fighter of all time before his last fight, but Usman wanted to make an undisputed claim on that status, only had things sailed for him a little smoother. Usman is the former UFC welterweight champion and the former P4P King who lost his belt only in his last fight against Leon Edwards in a rematch at UFC 278. Usman is most likely to face Leon again in a trilogy in his next fight.

Usman trains at Kill Cliff FC as well as under the gym of Trevor Wittman, training alongside the likes of Michael Chandler, Gilbert Burns, Justin Gaethje, Rose Namajunas and many more. Usman is known for his wins over the likes of Gilbert Burns, Leon Edwards, Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, Rafael Dos Anjos, Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley, Sean Strickland and many more. Usman was the one out of the first batch of UFC champions from the African continent alongside Israel Adesanya and Francis Ngannou.

In the latest episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, Usman talks about his loss to Edwards, his take on Colby Covington, his assessment of Jorge Masvidal’s callout of Leon Edwards, his reaction to the PED accusations and much more. In the midst of all, Usman also talks about how his journey to retirement would’ve been afterwards had he defeated Edwards at UFC 278.

“This was my roadmap, beat Leon in the way I wanted to and go to 205 lbs, beat Jiri Prochazka, defend with Jan [Blachowicz], come back down, defend with Khamzat Chimaev, and then, if Conor [McGregor] wanted to, or if Canelo [Alvarez] at that point, then just do one and sail off…” says Usman.

Usman expressed time and again that he is capable of winning over some fighters skillfully in the light-heavyweight division, so he was keen to challenge the current 205 lbs champion, Jiri Prochazka someday. The reason Usman was skipping the middleweight division was that his fellow countryman Israel Adesanya is ruling the 185 lbs division right now. On the other hand, Usman also wanted to challenge either Conor McGregor for a money fight or Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match to challenge his striking. What did you make of Usman’s aspirations in a parallel world?
