A thoughtful plan for Kamaru Usman? Chael Sonnen shares his expertise on the matter
Kamaru Usman and Chael Sonnen
Chael Sonnen recently in a recent YouTube video analyzes the opportunities that Kamaru Usman possesses if he plans to change his weight class.
Kamaru Usman is at the top of his weight class and the pound-for-pound king. Having wiped out nearly half of his competition in the welterweight division. The Nigerian Nightmare has been out of action after sustaining an injury in his hand during his rematch with Colby Covington, that took place last November.
Usman on several occasions has indicated that his recovery will be much more time than expected but the UFC has already confirmed we shall see the Nigerian again in action at UFC 278 in August where he will take on Leon Edwards in a title fight.
Calculated move: Chael Sonnen gives Kamaru Usman the edge if he moves up a weight class
In his recent video, the American Promoter talks about how he thinks that Kamaru Usman if he were to move up to the light-heavyweight category, will hold the advantage of speed over opponents. However if he were to make the decision to change weight classes, there is the added possibility he would have to give up his welterweight title.
Sonnen believes that despite being at his heaviest, Usman still would find it difficult to weigh 205lbs. He too agrees that if he were to move up the weight class the champ would have to vacate his current title.
Chael says, “He’s going to have massive speed. I mean you can get the X’s and O’s and you can start to have fun and you can even just tell me, ‘Hey Chael, it’s too big and he’s not gonna go there’. Kamaru Usman soaking wet doesn’t weigh 205 [lbs]… I think if we were to get there, if we were to be really serious when we were to get there, Kamaru’s going to have to vacate 170 pounds.”
Even Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has outrightly claimed that Usman could beat the top three ranked light-heavyweights. Chael feels that this is some sort of marketing strategy as the celeb manager is not known to do or say anything that isn’t futile.
