Dustin Poirier and Benoit Saint-Denis were to clash heads in the co-main event of UFC 299. However, ‘The Diamond’ recently took to X and claimed the fight was off. This shocked the entire MMA community since they were thrilled for the fight to go down. Now, in a turn of events, Poirier stated it was a misunderstanding on his part and confirmed the fight was on as scheduled.
In his latest tweet, Dustin Poirier revealed he couldn’t contact his manager for a few days, which resulted in him not getting any confirmation about the fight. Further, he apologized for the confusion he caused and affirmed the fight with Benoit Saint-Denis was going down as scheduled. Here is what he said:
Sorry folks, I jumped the gun, I couldn't get a hold of my manager for a few days. I just spoke with him and Hunter. Misunderstanding on my part. Fight is on! See you March 9th Miami!!!Dustin Poirier via X
UFC CEO Dana White announced Dustin Poirier vs. Benoit Saint-Denis last month. This surprised the MMA world since Poirier was stigmatized for not fighting any rising fighters. As such, when Poirier claimed the fight was canceled, fans stormed comments of him ducking ‘God of War.’ However, ‘The Diamond’ disclosed to MMA reporter Ariel Helwani that it was due to not attaining a contractual agreement. This revelation made the fans turn on Dana White and accuse him of underpaying UFC fighters.
Dustin Poirier lost his previous fight to Justin Gaethje at UFC 292. With this loss, ‘The Diamond’ lost hope in competing for UFC gold again. As such, he agreed to fight Benoit Saint-Denis to prove his worth in the lightweight division and potentially start another run to the title. As such, he confirmed the fight with the Frenchman in UFC 299 in March at Kaseya Center, Miami.
Looking at the recent run of Dustin Poirier and Benoit Saint-Denis
The MMA world was thrilled ever since UFC CEO Dana White announced Dustin Poirier vs. Benoir Saint-Denis. Now, amidst the recent confusion, the hype for the fight has only increased. As such, take a look at the recent career highs and lows of the two fighters getting into action in UFC 299.
Dustin Poirier (29-8-0) is a UFC veteran and arguably one of the greatest fighters ever not to win the undisputed title. In his recent run, Poirier failed his second attempt at the title against Charles Oliveira in UFC 269. Since then, he went to war against Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje, claiming victory only against the former Bellator champion. As such, he is coming off a knockout loss to Gathje. Further, the veteran was cited as the underdog as per the bookmakers.
Benoit Saint-Denis (13-1-0) shocked the MMA world when he bounced back from his first loss in his UFC debut. Since then, the French military veteran has gone undefeated, claiming victory over victory. He laid Matt Frevola out cold on the UFC canvas in his previous fight. As such, this impressive win made the UFC book a fight with the credited Dustin Poirier. This would be his chance to break into the top five of the lightweight rankings. This fight goes down the co-main event at UFC 299.
