Alex Pereira has put brakes on speculation about a third title fight in a different weight class. Pereira firmly denied rumors of a move to the heavyweight division for UFC 300. Here is what happened:
Although not completely ruling out a future move to heavyweight, Alex Pereira emphasized the importance of approaching such a transition the right way. Speaking to TheMacLife, Pereira said:
[I’m] a fighter, bro, [I’m] willing to fight. [I’ll] fight anybody, anywhere. But this kind of thing (a heavyweight move at UFC 300) – [I have] the height and [am] basically the size of a heavyweight.Alex Pereira told The MacLife
Alex Pereira also addressed speculation about a potential matchup with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. Pereira played coy about the possibility of moving up to heavyweight for the fight, but he did leave the door open to switching weight classes in the future. Pereira recently posted a cryptic message on Instagram that seemed to tease a matchup with Aspinall for UFC 300 in April 2024. Aspinall also posted a doctored image of himself sitting alongside Pereira on Instagram.
Pereira has said that he is capable of fighting at heavyweight in the future. But he said he is currently focused on defending his light heavyweight title. Pereira became the UFC light heavyweight champion earlier this November at UFC 295. The Brazilian defeated former champion Jiří Procházka by TKO in the second round. Pereira’s win made him the ninth two-division champion in UFC history.
