“It’s the Dream” Alexander Volkanovski has an incredible vision of winning the lightweight title on short notice at UFC 280 and defending it in Australia
Volk has expressed interest in fighting for the lightweight belt and defending it
Alexander Volkanovski is undoubtedly one of MMA most evolved champions as of late. If it wasn’t for an upcoming Usman, title defense, Volk would have arguably topped the pound for pound list by now with his most recent showing against Max Holloway.
Currently the champion is in the US where he is recovering from a broken hand he suffered in the middle rounds of his UFC 276 fight. He is also there to be alongside his teammate, Kai Kara France as the young flyweight gets his first crack at a UFC title.
While here, Volk sat down for an interview with Mac Life, where he answered 20 random questions ranging from Cejudo to his school day fights. One of the questions asked was about his vision on transitioning to lightweight in his quest to become a double champ. His plans are ambitious to say the least.
Alexander Volkanovski believes he will beat whoever has the lightweight title
UFC 280 will be headlined by Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi as the face off for the vacant lightweight title. Both fighters are at the top of their game and it is expected to be fight that determines the future of the division in the long run. However Volk feels he can still find his place in the mix.
During the interview with Mac Life, Volk was asked what he would prefer more? Winning the title on short notice in Abu Dhabi or winning it with a full camp back in Australia. The champ initially said, “Oh mate winning it front of a home crowd that’s what I can’t wait for”
After this the champion asked if the reporter was adding in the stipulation that Volk can do both. “Cause I thought, you said win the title on short notice and defend it, “ said the Champ. While the reporter tried to correct his question, another person behind the camera asked Volk if that was the plan, to which the Aussie replied, “That’s the plan, that’s exactly what I wanna do, I wanna do both”
While no backup fighter has yet been announced for the lightweight bout , it’s safe to say that Volk can find his place there if he’s cleared by the commission with regard to his broken hand. The addition of Volk even as a backup, adds enormous star power to the already stacked UFC 280 card.
