Alexander Volkanovski is considered one of this generation’s most skillful fighters. Currently, he has five successful title defenses against the top-level featherweights. He is known to read his opponent’s movements and adjust even during the fight. Recently, the UFC legend Chael Sonnen declared that Alexander Volkanovski remains the most feared fighter in the UFC.
Sonnen, a former middleweight and light-heavyweight title challenger, praised Volkanovski’s reputation. “Alex Volkanovski is the most feared fighter in UFC history. How do I get to that conclusion? That’s just not an opinion, I’m looking at it, nobody calls him out”, Sonnen said. This refers to the fact that very few fighters have ever taken Volkanovski’s name in an aggressive call-out. He mauled every single opponent he fought.
The champ has an incredible MMA record of 26 wins and only two losses. His only loss in the UFC came when he moved up a division to challenge the champion. The fight against Islam Makhachev to become a double champ was a close loss. Before his debut in the UFC, he fought for the Australian Fighting Championship and also tried pro boxing.
His last fight came against the interim featherweight champ, Yair Rodriguez, at UFC 290. In round three, Volkanovski closed the fight with a dominant performance and a TKO. Now, he looks for another shot at the lightweight title. 5th ranked Ilia Topuria could challenge Volk if the UFC decides against a lightweight title fight for Volk.
Alexander Volkanovski and his double champ potential
The featherweight division is under the complete domination of Alex Volkanovski. He had patiently waited for his title shot. When he got the opportunity, he beat the then-champion Max Holloway. Volkanovski now has five successful title defenses. A champion of that sort deserved to fight for the double champion status. His aim was halted by Islam Makachev, who gave him his first defeat in the UFC.
The fight took place at UFC 284 and was a closely contested bout. For Makhachev, this was his first title defense, and for Volkanovski, it was all about glory. The fight showcased Volk overcoming his size disadvantage to batter Makhachev. However, he did not get the win on the scorecards. The two have promised to battle again.
Volkanovski’s next challenge in the featherweight division would be against Ilia Topuria. The 5th ranked fighter has shown incredible potential in his last few fights. Could he be the one to solve the puzzle of Volkanovski at featherweight?
