“NO ONE will take my opportunity,”- Alexander Volkanovski reveals his plans to ‘slip-in’ into the lightweight title fight at UFC 280
Charles Oliveira Alexander Volkanovski Islam Makhachev
Alexander Volkanovski will not mind slipping in if either Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev decides to pull out from UFC 280. This October, fight fans will be getting to witness one of the biggest title fights in recent UFC history. Oliveira, who lost his lightweight title due to weight cut issues at UFC 274 will be fighting Makhachev for the title. Stylistically it is an amazing fight as both the fighters are predominantly grapplers and have amazing submission skills.
The fight has gained humongous attention from all over the world and has the potential to break a few pay-per-view records. Both the fighters are cute in an impressive winning streak and will do their best to get their hands on the lightweight championship.
“I’m still training”- Alexander Volkanovski wants to be in top shape to act as a substitute if necessary at UFC 280
Alexander Volkanovski recently did an interview with Daniel Cormier on his official YouTube channel. During the conversation, Volkanovski opened up about his upcoming plans for the lightweight title fight.
While talking about the upcoming lightweight mega fight Makhachev vs Oliveira, Volkanovski revealed that he wants to be the substitute fighter if anybody from the pair decides to pull out. Volkanovski mentioned that he is currently in a training camp and wants to continue training to be in perfect condition for the fight. Volkanovski explained that he wants to be the guy who is always prepared for these kinds of opportunities because he doesn’t want to wait much.
“I want to get back in…I’m actually thinking, believe it or not, I’m thinking of, because I’m still training, of being if they need a backup fighter, I’m gonna be the guy that’s gonna be there. … I’m telling them I want to be there. I want to be the backup. I’m going to be fit enough, I’m going to get enough of a camp to stay in good enough fitness, and I’ll do it. That’s the type of guy I am. As I always say, I’ll make sure no one else can take that opportunity away from me. Because if someone else goes and does that, you know what I mean, then that puts me on the side and then I got to wait even longer. I don’t like that. I’m happy to sit there and if someone gets injured, or doesn’t make weight, or whatever, I’ll slip in.” Said Volkanovski.
It might seem like a stretch that Volkanovski would be that lucky to get the title shot at UFC 280. Both Makhachev and Oliviera have been looking forward to this fight as it is an opportunity for them to prove their capabilities. However, there is always a chance of an unwanted injury or failed wet cut etc.
If nothing goes wrong before the fight at UFC 280, then the Australian has already planned to fight the winner of the two. However, would the promotion and the to-be new lightweight champion agree on the match-up? Do let us know in the comment section.
