Despite winning via decision, Alexander Volkanovski revealed the tough times during his fight against Brian Ortega. On the ‘Impaulsive’ podcast hosted by controversial YouTuber Logan Paul, the Australian UFC contender explained the thought process of a near-death experience he suffered during the much-anticipated bout.
At UFC 266, Lightweight contenders Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega went head to head. Years after the event, the Australian fighter recalled the guillotine choke Ortega imposed on him. He revealed the refusal to tap out under the brutal chokehold he was in. “When Brian Ortega was choking you, is it just pure survival instinct?” asked Logan Paul. Without hesitation, Volkanovski gave his honest thoughts on the fight.
“Obviously, tapping was just never an option,” said Alexander Volkanovski. He then continued, “So, I was doing what I needed to do, and it wasn’t f****** working. And then, I’m just like ‘well, I’m gonna keep f***** trying,‘” revealed the Australian fighter. “And then the lights started dimming. It was either, his arms are gonna gas out or I die,” said Alexander as Logan Paul and his co-host chuckled.
Despite going through a rough time, Alexander Volkanovski won the fight. His determination and refusal to tap out earned him a dominant victory. This gave Brian Ortega another loss on his record.
Alexander Volkanovski choked out Logan Paul
Recently, UFC star Alexander Volkanovski was on the ‘Impaulsive’ podcast hosted by YouTuber Logan Paul. Prior to the podcast episode being filmed, a sparring session between both personalities went viral. Paul spared with Volkanovski and fellow UFC fighter and best friend Israel Adesanya. The YouTuber and the UFC lightweight contender spoke about their sparring session.
“You are so strong and dominant,” said Logan Paul. He continued, “You put me in a body lock, and I felt like you could’ve tightened your legs so much and literally split me in half.” Following that, Alexander Volkanovski chimed in, “With the triangle [choke] if I get these little legs, they’re harder to do things. But when they lock up, they lock up good. We wrapped around there pretty easy. Obviously, I knew you were gonna be taller and big. But when we wrestled, I was like ‘Oh s***.'”
Alexander Volkanovski credited Logan Paul for his wrestling ability. Due to his college wrestling experiences, Paul was known to have a good understanding of the sport. However, Alexander, being a trained fighter, was able to ragdoll ‘The Maverick’ in their sparring sessions.
