Aljamain Sterling, the current UFC bantamweight champion, triumphed at UFC 288 last week in the biggest victory of his career. After solidifying the bantamweight championship title, Sterling is looking for big fights. After defeating Henry Cejudo, he made a big statement against his critics. Now, Funkmaster’s next opponent is Sean O’Malley, who is on the run to win the bantamweight division.
Aljamain successfully defended his UFC bantamweight title for the third time at the UFC 288 main event. After the win, in the post-fight interview with Sterling, he called O’Malley “cage side sitting. Since Sean O’Malley was the next contender for the title fight, he made his way into the cage. Both the champion and the contender exchanged intense words, forcing security to step in.
During the interview with MMAnews, the champion said, “It’s very frustrating,” about the weight cut. Aljo continued, “What it is is that I bloat so bad after making that kind of a drastic weight cut. My body just holds on to everything. I’m still pretty fit; my legs are okay, but my stomach, legs, and face get pretty puffy. 177 lbs, and I probably hit 180 and don’t even know it. And it’s not like it’s a good, healthy weight; I’m just big, and when the water starts to flush out, I get down to 168, 165, etc., but it’s a little frustrating because I wasn’t expecting that. I wanted a bit more time to enjoy it a little bit.”
Dana White already informed the fighting fans that this match-up can happen in August 2023. But as the funk master made a doubtful statement, the matchup might take a bit more time.
But Aljamain Sterling is also interested in creating the new milestone

Champion Sterling also showed his interest when he targeted the quick turnaround record. Ariel Helwani asked Sterling about his interest in quick defense against O’Malley at MMA hour. Funk Master said, “This would be the fastest turnaround, I would imagine, for a UFC champion. I’ll stand corrected, but I think Volkanovski was four and a half months from the Abu Dhabi card? We’d be neck and neck. It is quick.”
The 33-year-old is interested in the record, but the weight cuts are a bothersome factor, as the champion claimed. Now it will be up to the defending champion to give his final decision on the next fight date.
After the third title defense, Aljo called out Sugar, citing the grudge match already built up between both fighters. Earlier, the expectation was to have the nail-biting bout in August.
