“Insane this is a reality” Aljamain Sterling ecstatic after having May 23rd named after him in his home county
Aljamain Sterling came out on top at UFC 273, finally becoming an undisputed champion and it seems like happy days are ahead of him
After trials and tribulations, the road ahead is that of glory. Aljamain Sterling can attest to that as, after a tough 2021 , things have surely turned around for the undisputed bantamweight champion. For those who don’t remember it all started when Sterling won his bantamweight title in a less than ideal way when he was kneed to the face by Petr Yan while he both his knees were on the ground.
Though fans accepted that the strike by Yan was a blatant foul many more were angered by Sterling’s reaction to it with many claiming that he was “overacting.” Though Petr Yan shared this opinion many fighters attested to the fact that taking a hard strike while you least expect it surely does that to a fighter. Since then it was online trolls rampaging all over Aljamain Sterling’s social media reminding him on every post about the way he gained the belt and referring to him as “Paper Champ”
Aljamain would look to a rematch with Yan in Abu Dhabi at UFC 267, however, the fight was called off due to Aljo requiring more time to recover from neck surgery, one that he urgently needed after the knee by Yan. Many took this opportunity to further mound on to Aljo claiming that he was “ducking” a rematch against Yan.

Aljamain Sterling hopes to inspire many to achieve their dreams
While Yan went on to win an interim title bout against Cory Sandhagen in Abu Dhabi, Aljo waited on the sidelines, ailing his injuries while still being trolled relentlessly. By this time around, however, Aljo had completely embraced the chaos of trolls and was confident in his ability to overcome the challenge that was Petr Yan.
At UFC 273, when the cage door finally closed, it looked like a much more competitive fight than the first time out. While Petr rushed in almost fighting out of rage and range in the initial rounds, Aljo stayed patient, maintaining his distance eventually taking Petr Down and holding him there for a majority of rounds 2 & 3. When the scorecards came in, Sterling won the bout via split decision and in the eyes of many became the true bantamweight champion.
Now the county that he grew up in, Nassau County has declared the 23rd of May to be Aljamian Sterling day, where he will be given the full honor of a motorcade and ceremony at his high school alma mater. Reacting to the announcement the champion said, “Insane to think that this is a reality! I’m honored and excited for such a big moment in time.” Aljo siad he wants to inspire many others to fulfill their dreams like he did.
