The main event fight between Sean O’Malley and Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 ended in a spectacular fashion. Sean O’Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling in 2nd round of the fight to become the new UFC bantamweight champion of the world. But this beautiful ending resulted in speculation. Some people were not convinced by Marc Goddard‘s stoppage at the fight. Many even claimed that Sterling could’ve survived the violence if it could’ve gone on a little longer.

In the post-fight press conference, former champ Aljamain Sterling expressed his opinion on the stoppage. Sterling said, “I felt like the fight could’ve kept going, to be honest. I rolled over to try to come back up, and as soon as he stepped in, I was fine. It was just one of those things. I can’t be mad at the ref. It is what it is.

This was Sterling’s 2nd ever knockout loss which ended his bantamweight title run. Sterling has blamed the ending on his lack of patience. The right hand that dropped the former champ came as a counterpunch to one of his attacks.

This loss ruined Sterling’s plans of going up one weight class above. But, he does want a second opportunity to prove that he’s capable of becoming the champion once again.

Before UFC 292, the former champ Aljamain Sterling stated his aspirations to challenge featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski for his belt. Sterling had his future plans in play until he got hit by Sean O’Malley’s right hand which disrupted everything the former champ had imagined for himself.

In the post-fight press conference, Sterling was asked if he still plans to fight in the 145 lbs division. Sterling was brutally honest in his answer. He said that if O’Malley can catch him with a right hand then he can’t imagine the damage that Volkanovski would do. The featherweight champion has been one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC. He is right now untouchable in his division with the only threat lying around being Ilia Topuria. Volk is indeed a dangerous opponent for Sterling as the Aussie national has proved time and again his superiority in matchups. Be lightweight or featherweight, getting an upper hand against Volk is pretty difficult.

After UFC 292, Sterling has a clear picture of how he wants to move forward after this loss. A rematch or a few tune-up fights at the bantamweight could be in the plans for the “Funkmaster”.
