Ben Askren explained why Dagestani wrestlers appear to dominate the UFC compared to their American counterparts. Despite no longer actively fighting, Askren, known for his wrestling background, provided a fascinating viewpoint on Dagestani fighters’ success in the MMA world. The Dagestani wrestling was pioneered by none other than the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov.
In a video shared by James Lynch, Askren emphasized the importance of Dagestani wrestling in the UFC. According to Askren, one of the most important reasons contributing to Dagestani wrestlers’ success is their ability to integrate numerous grappling techniques smoothly. He also believed that American wrestling was better than Dagestani wrestling. This is what he had to say:
No. I just think they are really high level competitors and they are very good at what they do and they have some sambo mixed in… We [Americans] are already way ahead of them [Dagestanis]. The part of the problem is our best guys are not fighting, our best guys are wrestling.Ben Askren via YouTube
He emphasized that the “Dagestani style” incorporates wrestling and other grappling disciplines from Sambo. This results in a more well-rounded and adaptable skill set. Askren noted the UFC’s shortage of high-level American wrestlers. He also pointed out that Dagestani fighters’ ability to combine wrestling with different grappling disciplines made them more successful.
Ben Askren’s observations shed light on why Dagestani wrestlers are now performing better in the UFC than their American counterparts. In his opinion, this is due to high-level American wrestlers not fighting in MMA.
Ben Askren believes that he will come out of retirement to fight Jorge Masvidal
Former mixed martial artist Ben Askren has declared his willingness to terminate his retirement and return to the octagon. However, he only wants a potential showdown against Jorge Masvidal. Askren, who played an important role in Masvidal’s ascent to superstardom, notably following the iconic flying-knee knockout at UFC 239, is looking forward to another chance to battle “Gamebred.”
Askren made his intentions evident during an interview on Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel. He said that if UFC CEO Dana White proposed a fight against Masvidal for UFC 300, he would gladly come out of retirement. Despite their former animosity and Masvidal’s present popularity in the MMA world, Askren looks forward to a rematch.
Askren, who has a wrestling background, said that Jorge Masvidal’s chances of accepting the rematch were slim. He predicted that financial concerns would play a part. Despite the doubts, Askren emphasized his preparation, stating that he was in good form and would be ready for the fight if it occurred.
