“Reason why you don’t see me” – Beneil Dariush reveals the REAL REASON for not being in the title contention
Beneil Dariush
Beneil Dariush is one of the top 5 lightweights in the world. That isn’t just a statement made by a fan. The UFC themselves confirmed it as he moved to #4 in the lightweight rankings after UFC 280. Dariush also hasn’t lost in almost 5 years.
So with such an impressive record, he has surely fought for the lightweight title. Well, no actually. Dariush hasn’t received a title opportunity even though he’s been racking up wins and is now on an 8-fight win streak after beating Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 280. And now, with Alexander Volkanovski fighting Makhachev for the title, Beneil Dariush has once again been snubbed.
Fans everywhere have wondered for a long time why Dariush hasn’t fought for the title yet, with no answers in sight. Well, the man himself has decided to give fans the reason behind these apparent snubs. Speaking to KRGV Sports, he said: “There seems to be this approach in MMA right now on how to make fights bigger. You talk a little bit of smack, you have an altercation in the back room or something, stuff like that builds fights.”
“You’re not really going to see me involved in stuff like that. So I think that’s the reason why you don’t see me pushed so much.” So there we have it, the real reason why Beneil Dariush doesn’t get pushed like some other fighters, from the man himself.
Beneil Dariush really is one of the best lightweights in the world. He has impressive wins in his resume like Tony Ferguson, Mateusz Gamrot, and Michael Johnson. Which is why, no matter how long the wait, he will eventually get his title shot.
Who should Beneil Dariush fight next?
Even though Dariush has racked up several wins in the lightweight division, he is still quite overlooked. And now, with Alexander Volkanovski fighting Islam Makhachev, it seems like he will be passed over once again. So what is next for Dariush?
Simple logic dictates that Benny should fight for the title next. But with that option out of the picture, what else can he do? There are a few options at this point. One that has been making the rounds in social media is a fight in Brazil against Charles Oliveira. However, with “Do Bronxs” announcing that he needs a break, that is no longer an option.
Since both the first and second options are not viable, there is only one more fight for Dariush at 155. And that is, fighting the winner of Poirier vs Chandler in a title eliminator. Though a lot of people assume whoever wins that match fights for the title next, that simply is not possible because of the presence of Alexander Volkanovski. Which is why it makes perfect sense for Dariush and either Poirier or Chandler to fight each other.
If that fight happens and Dariush manages to extend his win streak to 9 victories, his claim to the #1 contender spot would be undisputed. Another fact to remember is that he will be facing either the #2 or #5 ranked lightweight. That is surely enough to legitimize his title shot. Nevertheless, only time will reveal what will actually happen as Poirier vs Chandler rapidly approaches.
