Big John McCarthy is one of the most recognisable names in MMA. He has been the third man in the cage for some of the biggest fights in sports since 1994’s UFC 2, and many people consider him to be the best referee in the business. Over the past 23 years, he has worked with every significant MMA promotion imaginable in addition to his appearances in the Octagon. He has also managed fights in boxing and kickboxing.

Bellator will not be his first time acting as an on-air personality, despite the fact that he is best recognised for his refereeing. He stopped competing in mixed martial arts in 2007 to work for The Fight Network and provide colour commentary for the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view event.

Legendary MMA referee McCarthy defended Adesanya while speaking with Josh Thomson about the incident on WEIGHING IN XTRA. He urged that competitors at the top of their weight class experience a change in style.

He stated, “Look, first off, Izzy is in a position as champion. Has he changed his fighting style a little bit? I do think he has. He has less output, he’s much safer, he’s much more defensive, he doesn’t take the chances he did when he was coming up and starching people.” Here is the said video:

Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald gave it their all in their legendary rematch, which is considered one of the best fights in the history of the sport. In the co-main event of UFC 189 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Lawler faced MacDonald for the second time with his welterweight belt on the line. Even while many believed the fight would be fantastic, what actually happened inside the cage far surpassed all expectations.

On the 7 year anniversary, John took to Twitter as he refereed the fight, he stated, “7 years ago today these 2 Warriors put everything they had into a 20+minute moment in time that still leaves me in awe today. Hard to explain how much was left in the cage that night….. never forget”. Here is the said Tweet:
