Jon Jones shocked a lot of fans after pictures of him training with jiu-jitsu legend Gordon Ryan went viral. Ryan is widely regarded as the top no-gi grappler globally and has various achievements. He teamed up with Jones, who is arguably the greatest MMA fighter ever, creating an intimidating partnership, especially ahead of UFC 295.
During his conversation with Morning Kombat, Ryan talked about training and teaching Jones about jiu-jitsu. The fighter also compared Jones with the great GSP in terms of his ability to learn and use them in fights.
“Jon is a lot like ‘GSP. He’s not the best wrestler in the world, he’s not the best striker in the world, he’s not the best at jiu-jitsu in the world but when it’s time to put things all together — just like Georges, he does it better than anybody else in the world…With Jon, he’s always looking to integrate new things into his game.” said the BJJ legend.
Ryan provided insight into Jones’ skill set, highlighting his proficiency in combining striking, wrestling, and Jiu-jitsu effectively in fights, like how Georges St-Pierre excelled in his prime. This comparison shows that Jones, like St-Pierre, maximizes his diverse martial arts abilities to their fullest potential during his bouts.
Ryan revealed that Jones is always open to learning new things and he’s extremely good at picking up new abilities. Lastly, Ryan was extremely impressed by Jones’ natural talent for changing his game plan mid-fight by looking at his opponent’s weaknesses.
Gordon Ryan shares his thoughts on Jon Jones’ next opponent, Stipe Miocic
Jon Jones is currently gearing up for his UFC heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. It was the fight that Jones had been looking forward to for a long time and expectedly, the hype around the fight was huge.
Jones’s recent training partner, Gordon Ryan, revealed in a recent interview that he doesn’t think Stipe Miocic is anything special when it comes to the octagon. Ryan mentioned that Stipe Miocic doesn’t possess particularly exceptional grappling skills in MMA. While he’s not subpar, he lacks standout abilities like remarkable control, exceptional submissions like triangles or armbars, or the ability to keep someone grounded if they get mounted.
Ryan characterized Stipe as a proficient but somewhat standard all-around grappler. He also suggested that Jon Jones is more focused on self-improvement as an athlete than studying Stipe extensively at this stage.
Surprising Ryan, Stipe is considered the greatest heavyweight in the history of the UFC, with nasty knockout power. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see both of these going at each other with full intensity.
