“I’m just a deadly opponent”- Brian Ortega still believes he’s the one to dethrone Alexander Volkanovski
Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega
On July 16, the upcoming UFC Fight Night event on Long Island, New York, will feature a five-round main event between the featherweights Brian Ortega and Yair Rodriguez.
A two-time candidate for the 145-pound title, Ortega has been around the top of the UFC rankings in recent years while retaining a stellar record that includes victories over Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung.
After losing to Max Holloway in 2018, he only had two championship defeats before suffering his most recent loss to Alexander Volkanovski in a Fight of the Night this past September.
Brian Ortega is interested in facing UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski again
Alexander Volkanovski, the current Featherweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is the opponent Ortega aspires to face again. Following a season of coaching against each other on The Ultimate Fighter, Volkanovski and Ortega first crossed paths in the Octagon at UFC 266 in September 2021. (TUF). Due to the prolonged lead time before the fight, the rivalry grew considerably more than was initially anticipated when it was booked.
During the Media scrum, Ortega stated, “I would love that personally because I feel like from what the world’s seeing is he’s won the belt, he’s defended the belt, and the one person that gave him the hardest time was me, put him in the most danger he’s ever been in his career.”
He isn’t so convinced a title chance would be in his near future after losing two of his last four fights, regardless of the performance he puts on in a potential victory. Although Ortega’s only two defeats have come in championship bouts, he is unsure if beating Rodriguez will be enough to give him another shot at the title.
