UFC Fight Night 237 took place Saturday, at Mexico City. It saw Brian Ortega roll an ankle during the introductory phase of his bout. But still, rally on to bag a win nonetheless. His thrilling comeback to choke Yair Rodriguez after almost blowing his ankle has left fans in awe. The two-time title challenger has thus advanced to 16-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC with his submission win at UFC Mexico City. Concurrently, there’s someone, in particular, he has in mind to thank for it – God.
Even in the lead-up, the UFC Mexico City Media Day scrum saw Rodriguez and him have a 3 vs 1 anime-esque face-off. The friendly notion of this sporting spirit of him and his family had warmed fight fans. Which he thanks his faith in God for. In a post-fight interview with Fullsend MMA following his victory, he mentioned:
It has been rough....I lost one of my best friends, I lost two friends after that. I got betrayed by people that were close to me. I had four surgeries back to back... It looked dark...I went to church and I found God. A year ago, I was a broken man, and now, today, I'm married. I got my kids with me. I got my family back...Brian Ortega said
Even before, preceding this, Ortega had detailed his financial despair and bouncing back to MMA. With a determined Yair Rodriguez wanting to finish, the first round saw him wobble around with a busted nose. With the rival pegging him and dropping him with a leg kick, things looked dire. Especially considering the leg kick had enough caliber for play-by-play commentator Joe Rogan to even fanboy over his wild striking.
But Ortega did bounce back with a gargantuan shift in momentum in Round 3, with an arm-triangle choke. Consequently, he went on to bag his victory at the 0:58 mark via submission. Time and again he keeps proving his mettle with his endurance and ability to bounce back from oddities of all kinds.
UFC Mexico City play-by-play: Brian Ortega vs. Yair Rodriguez
Brian Ortega’s first attempt vs. Yair Rodriguez started well and ended in an injury. In their last fight, Ortega popped his shoulder in Round 1. Ortega’s second attempt, however, started with an injury but ended better. In a hyped-up 15-minute stretch, the fighter overcame a rolled ankle, a baggy mouse under his eye, a busted nose, and a bad disposition. Here’s how it all went down at UFC Fight Night 237.
In the opening round, Rodriguez dropped Brian Ortega throughout. While ‘T-City’ seemingly tweaked something and hopped around briefly, a good kick pulled him down, flooring him. With him having his guard up, Rodriguez went on top and subjected him to a swarm of punches. Ortega did manage to reverse it all and finish it on top, but barely.
The 2nd round saw him with a busted face, but started out as an aggressor. Wobbling Rodriguez to the cage with a double leg drag-down. Stuck in a weak guillotine, the impaired fighter did manage to stay substantially on top. With a cut near Rodriguez’s right eye and a dominant ground game, the clear takeaway was Ortega.
And then came the subsequent last round, with both clashing on with a swing. With a clinch and wobble down, Ortega went for a quick submission. Tripping Rodriguez, he immediately went for a mount, with a triangle in mind.
With a quick submission, Ortega ran into the crowd to hug his sons. Ortega, 33, is thus snapping out of a two-fight skid. consisting of substantial losses to Alexander Volkanovski and Rodriguez.
