“Forgot what got me here,” Brian Ortega reflects on refocusing back to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ahead of UFC Long Island
Brian Ortega
Brian Ortega is still one heck of a serious contender in the featherweight division. But after a second consecutive title fight loss, anyone would doubt themselves. For Ortega, reflecting back on the roots of his martial arts career was the solution as he enters the weekend with a fight against his friend and fellow potential title contender Yair Rodriguez. Ortega is widely known for being the first fighter to knock out future Hall of Famer Frankie Edgar in the latter’s MMA career.
Ortega is widely known as one of the best grapplers in all of the current UFC roster. He last fought a unanimous Fight of the Year last year when he went into a war with current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Ortega is 15-2 in his overall MMA career with 10 wins via finishes and wins over the likes of Edgar, Chan Sung Jung, Cub Swanson, Renato Carneiro, Clay Guida, Diego Brandao and many more.
Brian Ortega believes he needs to don his hat of being the “Jiu Jitsu guy” back again
In an interview for ESPN MMA, Brian Ortega talks elaborately about the life around his children and his girlfriend, UFC flyweight Tracie Cortez, his underestimated striking, his fight against Rodriguez this weekend and much more. Ortega then stumbles upon returning back to his good old roots of dominating the fight with his grappling, courtesy of his specialisation in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
“See everyone tells me man you’re the Jiu-Jitsu guy and after a while, you believe it, and then you go and do other arts and then you forget your bread and butter that got you there, so Rener [Gracie, Ortega’s coach] literally told me like he did this which is something old Brian would have never missed, and that kind of hit me right there and I was like f**k,” said Ortega.
What do you make of Brian Ortega’s thoughts of sorta becoming the old Ortega back again? Do you think he will defeat Rodriguez this weekend and liken his chances for a third title shot in the near future? Where do you put Ortega amongst the most exciting fighters of all time?
