The shoulder injury that caused Brian Ortega to lose his fight with Yair Rodriguez is described as possibly needing a third operation. In the first round of his featherweight title fight against Yair Rodriguez on Saturday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, he dislocated his shoulder, which led to a TKO loss and significant sadness for the much awaited matchup between contenders.

Even though the battle had only been going on for a little over four minutes when Ortega’s arm popped out of the socket, he thought he was shining inside the octagon. It’s impossible to say what would have happened if the injury hadn’t occurred, but Ortega believes he was headed for the victory.

The incident happened in the first round around the 4:11 second mark. Rodriguez had just been sent to the ground by Ortega, who was attempting to free his right arm from an armbar Rodriguez had thrown up from his back. Although Ortega did not appear to be in any danger during the submission attempt and it was not at all tight, pulling Ortega’s arm back appears to have been the source of the dislocation. Ortega underwent surgery after suffering the same shoulder injury in 2016.

In the post-interview, he stated, “Do what I have to do. I pray to God that I don’t have to get surgery. I’ve already had two shoulder surgeries as it is, so I’m praying I don’t have to go under that knife again because it just sucks when you have to get surgery.” Here is the said interview produced by UFC.

Ortega stated he hopes Rodriguez is the opponent when he is ready to rematch so they can put the battle to rest once and for all. The two featherweights are friends, and going into Saturday, they both stated that they would want to avoid each other. They might wind up confronting each other twice, it seems.
