In connection with a shooting in San Jose, California, the former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was formally charged with attempted premeditated murder and a number of firearms assault offences, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
During a “11-mile, high-speed chase” through San Jose, Velasquez pursued Goularte’s truck in his own automobile, slammed it, and then repeatedly fired a 40-caliber revolver into the vehicle, which was hauling Goularte and two elderly relatives. Paul Bender, Goularte’s 63-year-old stepfather, was wounded once in the arm and chest but is expected to make a full recovery, according to court records.
A traffic stop led to the discovery and subsequent arrest of Velasquez, according to court records. Three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with the intent to commit a crime are among the charges brought against him. He is also accused of trying to kill someone and of shooting at an occupied car or aeroplane.

In a new development, Velasquez has entered a not-guilty plea to accusations of attempted murder and other crimes involving firearms. The pre-trial hearing for Velasquez is now scheduled for September 26. His refusal to post bail has been appealed to the appellate court.
Cain was also scheduled for a motion hearing on August 29. It will be an in-camera hearing (in private chambers). The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office and his lawyers are still at odds over the significance of records related to Goularte’s arrest, including conversations with the youngster about the alleged sexual abuse by Goularte.
