Cain Velasquez was arrested in connection with a shooting in California’s Bay Area back in February 2022. The former UFC champion was booked into the Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of attempted murder. He is accused of engaging in an 11-mile high-speed chase with a man accused of molesting his close family relative.
Velasquez is an American professional wrestler who used to compete in the UFC. He retired from MMA due to injuries in October 2019 with a record of 14-3. The American was a UFC heavyweight champion with notable wins over the likes of Junior Dos Santos and WWE megastar Brock Lesnar. He used to train at the AKA gym under Javier Mendez in California with UFC double champ Daniel Cormier and others.
The former champion and his team have been fighting for the past five months to get a release from jail. He was arrested after footage showed him shooting at a car that carried, Harry Goularte, a sexual assault suspect. Harry was alleged to have performed unlawful acts on several underage kids. A kid, who was a relative of Cain was alleged to be abused by Harry which is believed to be the reason for Cain’s attack.

According to the police, the former champion was arrested after he allegedly chased and fired a gun at a car containing three people, including Harry Goularte, an alleged child molester. The car also contained Harry’s mother, and his stepfather Paul Bender.
The former champion pleaded not guilty on Friday in connection to multiple charges against him. Yesterday Velasquez appeared in Santa Clara County court to submit the no guilty plea. A pre-trial hearing is now set for Sept. 26 and An August 29 motion hearing was also set for him. That hearing will be held in private chambers. It will also be documented.
Cain faces a total of ten charges against him. The charges range from attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, to having a loaded firearm with intention to commit a felony. If sentenced on all of the charges, he could potentially face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
Following his arrest, there has been a lot of vocal support from the MMA community for Velasquez. From UFC president Dana White to former fellow teammates Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and a bunch of other MMA stars have constantly spoken in support of Velasquez. The MMA community has also started a movement on social media named #Freecain.
