“There’s a story,” Chael Sonnen on why Conor McGregor’s returning fight should be one of his victims from the 2018 bus incident
Michael Chiesa- Conor McGregor
UFC megastar Conor McGregor might get around the corner of the welterweight division anytime soon since he is done with his healing process and has started training back in mixed-martial arts. McGregor, the former 2-division champion of the UFC is expected to return by early fall as per UFC President Dana White. McGregor got his shin bone fractured from his last fight in July 2021, a trilogy against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
As a result of that fight, McGregor lost it via first-round TKO due to a doctor stoppage. Regardless, McGregor is fully confident in his return that he might fight for the welterweight title, which will be the third belt from the third weight division in his legacy if he ever aims to get it. But the current welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, is also the leading pound for pound #1 fighter with 5 title defences, the most defences amongst the current roster of champions.
Conor McGregor vs Michael Chiesa ‘checks a lot of boxes’ according to Chael Sonnen
Many personalities of the MMA community, alongside the fans as well, believe that McGregor should return for a tune-up fight before getting his hands on a title shot. Amongst these personalities, MMA Legend Chael Sonnen believes that as well. However, Sonnen also has a unique suggestion for who should welcome back McGregor into the active competition.
“But just to remind you guys. When the bus incident between Conor and the dolly and Khabib took place, there were lawsuits that followed that. And [Michael] Chiesa was one of them. Chiesa got glass into his eye, it was a very bad experience. I think that there’s a story there. I’ve always thought there was a story there that should be told. But neither guy has told it. Neither guy’s manager told it, neither camp has told it, no trainers have told it. But that’s the match. That’s a very interesting match from a stylistic standpoint. That checks a lot of boxes.” [h/t Mirror]
What do you think of Sonnen’s suggestion of putting UFC welterweight Michael Chiesa against Conor McGregor on McGregor’s return in 2022? Who do you think has the better chance of winning the fight? Chiesa might be facing a tough time professionally with his 2-fight skid, but he is highly regarded for his wins over the likes of Neil Magny, Rafael dos Anjos, Diego Sanchez, Carlos Condit, Beneil Dariush, Jim Miller, and many more.
