Sylvester Stallone- Chael Sonnen
When Chael Sonnen can pull off his Bad Guy persona in front of intimidating fighters such as the likes of Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, what’s the huge deal in doing it in front of a couple of actors? So, Sonnen decided to transcend this heel of his to the reel world and put on a show on the silver screen for the fans of “The American Gangster” who was raised on the “mean streets” of West Linn, Oregon. Sonnen did pretty well for a guy who was facing the absolute icons of the film industry for the first time.
Grudge Match is a movie released in 2013 that stars legendary Hollywood actors Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, who has been known for their contributions in Hollywood for almost half a century. The movie was released on the day of Christmas. The genre of the movie is sports comedy. The plot goes like this: Two ageing boxing competitors are coaxed out of retirement to battle against each other in one final bout which is to take place 30 years after their last contest.
You can watch Sonnen in the video above as the scene is cropped out of the movie. According to the scene, Sonnen and De Niro tried to demean mixed-martial arts in comparison to boxing in an interview with real-life former UFC correspondent Mike Goldberg. So both of these boxers receive wide boos from the audience and in addition to that, Sonnen emerges into the scenes who plays himself in the movie to defend his sport and in the confrontation that escalates quickly, Sonnen slaps Stallone, in return to which Stallone knocks Sonnen out cold.

Chael Sonnen is the former multiple-time UFC title challenger who has fought the likes of Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Rashad Evans, Fedor Emelianenko, Lyoto Machida, Demian Maia and many more. Sonnen’s list of wins includes the likes of Quinton Jackson, Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio Rua, Michael Bisping, Brian Stann, Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, Dan Miller, Paulo Filho and many more. Sonnen was also the semi-finalist for one of Bellator MMA’s heavyweight Grand Prix.
Ever since Sonnen retired in 2019 from fighting with a career spanning 2 decades, he has been actively involved in promoting, presenting and talking about combat sports events on his YouTube channel. Sonnen was formerly involved in promoting super fights in the world of grappling through his promotion: Submission Underground Grappling. But that work has been stopped for now. He is now much into his Youtube channel with a subscriber count of over a million.
Besides that, Sonnen also works as a sports analyst for ESPN-MMA and is a part-time commentator for Eagle FC. What did you make of Chael Sonnen’s scene with the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro in the movie Grudge Match? Where do you put Sonnen amongst the greatest non-champion fighters of all time? Where do you put him amongst the greatest trash talkers of all time? Today, the likes of UFC fighters, Conor McGregor and Colby Covington have framed their career well upon the footprints of greatness left by the one who many like to say was “undefeated” and “undisputed.”
