Chael Sonnen is a very powerful observer of the sport of MMA as well as its players and also, whom they remind of. Sonnen is one of the most respectable voices in the MMA community today. Having retired from the sport in 2019 after 2 decades of competing, Sonnen is a former multiple-time UFC title challenger as well as a semi-finalist in one of Bellator MMA’s heavyweight Grand Prix tournaments. Sonnen currently is a Youtuber with over a million subscribers on his channel.

Sonnen is also a sports analyst for ESPN MMA and commentator for Eagle FC, an MMA organization owned by former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Ever since Khabib retired from the sport of MMA back in 2020, his mentee has taken rightfully his place in the 155 lbs, that is none other than upcoming UFC title challenger Islam Makhachev. Makhachev is going to fight for the vacant lightweight title in Abu Dhabi and therefore, has his full training camp situated in his hometown of Dagestan, Russia.

Chael Sonnen claims that Islam Makhachev’s motivation isn’t embedded in fame and fortune

In one of the videos on his Youtube channel, Chael Sonnen talks about the build-up of the main event of UFC 280 featuring Makhachev and former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, Makhachev opening up about how Oliveira accepted to fight him and much more. In the midst of all, Sonnen also talks about what makes Makhachev stand out in terms of his persona as a UFC fighter.

“There’s a very Khabib-esque sincerity and drive that is not about fame and fortune that I find very refreshing,” says Sonnen.

Fair to say, both Khabib and Islam have always been about having a legacy that will stand the strongest tests of time. Even for Khabib, he never lured himself into coming back out of his decision of retirement for the sake of more money than he ever made and instead carried on with his life the way he is doing it now.
