“Every single fight is rinse and repeat,” Chael Sonnen points out the cons of Cody Gardbrandt’s fighting style

Cody Garbrandt- Chael Sonnen
MMA Legend Chael Sonnen has been in the sport of MMA long enough to point out the exact problem a fighter needs to amend when he sees one, ask him about former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Gardbrandt. Garbrandt is undisputedly in the toughest phase of his career with an ongoing 2-fight skid and a 3-fight skid before his knockout win over Rafael Assuncao back in 2020.
Gardbrandt last fought in December 2021 at UFC 269 when he made his flyweight debut but lost the bout unfortunately against Kai Kara France via first-round knockout. It’s hard to not conclude that the UFC might not keep Garbrandt for long considering his ongoing record.
But for sure Garbrandt in his prime was the toughest nail to hammer out for anyone in the top 5 of the bantamweight division. Garbrandt had to dethrone bantamweight great Dominick Cruz to become the bantamweight champion and became the second person to defeat Cruz in his overall MMA career, with someone defeating Cruz nearly after a decade. Some of the factors attributing to Gardbrandt’s losses in recent years are firstly his chin which has lost its durability and secondly, his reckless fighting style.

Chael Sonnen believes Cody Garbrandt can outwrestle most of the fighters in the bantamweight division

On his Youtube Channel, Chael Sonnen uploaded a video of him reacting to former 2-time bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw calling Garbrandt ‘not the smartest human being inside the cage.’ But before that, Sonnen had his own thoughts on Garbrandt’s current fighting style and his potential.
“Cody’s stubborn, that’s true!” says Sonnen “Cody Garbrandt, contrary to what you guys have seen, could out wrestle most of his opponents. I don’t know of a fight where that’s been shown adversely, I don’t know a fight off the top of the head where Cody was outwrestled, so you’ve seen the defensive abilities he has, I’m here to share with you he has those offensive abilities, he does not go with them. Every single Cody Garbrandt fight is rinse and repeat…
Prior to the fight, when you give your analysis Cody can win this fight if he gets in a shootout and the first opportunity he has to get in the shootout he’s going to get a shootout because he’s stubborn and if he does that, who the hell knows what’s gonna happen, he’s gonna get the guy or the guy’s gonna get him, it’s one of those things“ continues Sonnen.
What do you make of Sonnen’s assessment of Garbrandt? Do you think Garbrandt can compete better if he focuses more on utilizing the wrestling aspect adding up with his already ferocious knockout power? Who do you think should Garbrandt fight next in order to get back to the winning column? Where do you put Garbrandt amongst the fastest strikers in UFC history?
